One gambling firm operating in Sweden received a hefty fine after a decision of the country's Administrative Court.
The warning and penalty affect Kanon Gaming Limited and follow a sanction announced by the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen.
The sanction is proportionate and deterrent
The gambling watchdog said it identified deficiencies related to the operator's duty of care.
Those shortcomings in Kanon Gaming's operations in terms of responsible gambling brought a hefty fine from Spelinspektionen, along with a warning.
Standard in such regulatory matters, the operator was given the option to appeal the gambling regulator's decision, and the company did so in front of the Swedish Administrative Court.
In a verdict, the Court confirmed the warning and penalty fee but agreed to reduce the imposed sanction to SEK 4.8m ($510,000).
According to the Administrative Court, the penalty fee "should be high due to the shortcomings in the company's work with responsible gaming and the length of time the shortcomings have lasted."
However, it wrote that Kanon Gaming collaborated with Spelinspektionen to address the uncovered deficiencies swiftly.
This, among other factors, the Court said was in "favor of a lower fee."
"The court finds that SEK 4.8 million is a proportionate and deterrent sanction fee, taking into account both the seriousness of the violations and the company's finances," reads the verdict by the Administrative Court.
The fine comes during a busy period for Sweden's gambling sector
The latest penalty fee comes during a busy period for Spelinspektionen.
Earlier this month, the Swedish gambling watchdog confirmed that its longtime Director General, Camilla Rosenberg, will be stepping down from her role.
Per the announcement, Rosenberg will resign, effective October 31, 2025.
Only recently, Sweden recorded a dip in channelization rate to 85%.
In 2023, the country's channelization to legal gambling was an estimated 86%.
However, in 2024, a slight decrease in that rate was observed, which fell to 85%.
Still, an overwhelming majority of 96% of the players are aware that a regulated gambling market exists.
