At least six federal lawsuits have now been filed in Nevada against Boyd Gaming Corp. The company revealed in September that it had suffered a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of employee information and other sensitive data.
Multiple lawsuits target Boyd Gaming over data breach
Soon after, a lawsuit was filed by a former employee, one Scott Levy, whose complaint accuses the company of having been able to prevent the incident.
Levy is not alone, however, as several other plaintiffs have stepped forward, including Deandric Price, Sherekia Price, Larry Harris, Patricia Tiedtke, and Holly Neely so far.
Boyd Gaming Corp. has responded quickly to the matter of the cyberattack accident, notifying the relevant authorities and affected parties, and seeking to remedy the situation. However, the company has not commented on the onslaught of lawsuits, as it does not discuss pending legislation publicly as a rule.
The company has taken measures to mitigate the harm that this has caused by hiring independent cybersecurity experts and cooperating with relevant authorities and law enforcement to ensure that such accidents are prevented in the future.
In a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Boyd Gaming Corp said: "The company maintains a comprehensive cybersecurity insurance policy, which we expect will cover costs associated with incident response and forensic investigations, as well as business interruptions, legal actions, and regulatory fines, if any, subject to policy limits and deductibles."
Other companies suffer at the hands of hackers
However, the complaints allege that the company has failed to meet a robust cybersecurity standard. Boyd Gaming Corp. is hardly the only company to have suffered at the hands of hackers.
Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International supposedly both paid ransom in the millions to have their systems unblocked, with the extent of the data loss not fully understood.
Recently, a teenager was brought to trial in a case citing his alleged involvement in cybersecurity against "Las Vegas casinos," most likely referring to the attacks suffered by the two companies.
In 2024, another teenager was arrested in the UK over his alleged involvement in the MGM Resorts International hacking attack.
