Boyd Gaming hit with new lawsuits, problem gambling soars in Australia

Regulatory changes are facing several jurisdictions across the world this week, as Boyd Gaming Corp is dealing with the fallout of a cybersecurity accident that exposed employee data.

Boyd Gaming Corp is facing several lawsuits filed in Nevada, with the company addressing the fallout of a cyberattack that occurred earlier this year. Among the complaints filed against the company are allegations that the attack, which resulted in the leaking of employee data, was preventable.

Boyd Gaming Corp has notified the relevant regulators and has confirmed that it has taken all measures to mitigate any potential consequences to its business and people whose details have been compromised. Beyond that, the company has not commented on the litigations that it now faces from private parties.

In the meantime, Conor McGregor has put a price on his potential participation in the UFC White House event that is due to take place on America’s 250th birthday. He would be willing to take on the big ticket against Michael Chandler.

The event itself is set to host north of 5,000 people, with McGregor aggressively pushing to be invited. Now, however, he is putting a condition on his participation – a $100,000,000 paycheck.

Laws and regulations

Pennsylvania could be edging closer to ending an exemption of casino gaming floors from the 2008 Clean Indoor Air Act, which prohibits indoor smoking, but has left casinos largely unaffected by the measure nationwide.

Now, the Protecting Workers From Secondhand Smoke Act seems to be seeking to undo that, but approval from legislators would be needed. A new bill has already made it out of a House of Representatives committee, and it is expected to get a full floor hearing and vote.

In the meantime, Sweden is ending a loophole in its gambling laws that allowed gamblers to borrow money to play. While credit cards are not allowed for gambling in the country, the new amendment seeks to close any remaining loopholes that allow players to "borrow" money to play.

DraftKings is facing a lawsuit filed by a visually impaired sports bettor who said that the website was inaccessible to people who were blind.

Responsible gambling

A new study by the Australian National University has focused on the level of risky gambling behavior exhibited over the past several years. The study found that such gambling is at a six-year high.

While the authors found that overall gambling has been trending down for the past 15 years, new generations of players who are exposed to the activity through Internet betting options are more likely to develop a serious issue and engage in more aggressive betting and gambling practices.

At the same time, the socioeconomic background of a person who exhibits aggressive gambling behavior, or "risky behavior" as the study puts it, is diverse. While people from more challenging backgrounds are likely to bear the brunt of gambling-related issues and engage in risky behavior more often, many people do so all the same, including financially stable 9-5 professionals.
