The Indian Gaming Association (IGA), which is on a mission to protect and preserve the general welfare of Native American Tribes across the United States, mourns the loss of its Chairman, Ernest L. Stevens, Jr.
IGA honors the memory of Chairman Ernest L. Stevens, Jr.
On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Association confirmed the sudden passing of its Chairman.
AGA acknowledged Stevens' extensive contributions and lifelong dedication to Indian Country.
Serving IGA for more than two decades, the Chairman played a central role in the development of Indian gaming.
From 2000, when Indian gaming revenues were $11bn, under Stevens' guidance, a record-breaking $43.9bn in revenue was recorded in 2024.
However, his dedication to Indian Country extended far beyond gaming as he spearheaded economic goals and helped build a legacy of unity and dignity that created a new generation of tribal leaders.
Stevens contributed to major policy victories affecting tribal communities across the country and believed in the importance of the sovereignty of tribal governments.
Ultimately, his life-long contributions to the Indian gaming industry enabled the sector to generate vital funds for healthcare, schools, infrastructure projects and economic development across Indian Country.
"IGA honors Chairman Stevens’ memory by continuing the work he devoted his life to defending tribal sovereignty, empowering tribal governments, and celebrating the strength of Native nations. Chairman Stevens always believed his greatest accomplishment and legacy was his family," reads a statement released by the Indian Gaming Association.
Jason Giles, IGA's Executive Director, acknowledged that the Board is "stunned and saddened" by the sudden passing of Chairman Stevens.
"Out of respect for his wife Cheryl, his lovely family and the Oneida Nation, we will issue a full tribute at the appropriate time. Please send your prayers to the Stevens family," the executive added.
Giles acknowledged that Stevens wasn't just a Chairman of IGA, but also a "warrior, a statesman, and a champion for all of Indian Country."
The Executive Director praised the Chairman's vision and commitment that propelled economic growth for Indian Country by building bridges among tribal nations, federal agencies and Congress, among other stakeholders.
